Factors improving online user experienceA recent study (July 2008) by Sathish Menon and Michael Douma from the Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement reinforce usability truths but also sheds light on the disconnect between designers and their target audiences.

Some of the key findings from the study:

  • Designers think sites are more effective than they really are for users.
  • Users first need to be successful finding what they are looking for to be satisfied.
  • Website speed is still an important aspect of user experience (even with broadband users).
  • Users want a depth of content and lots of related links and suggested cross-linking.
  • Users struggle with web site navigation, while designers think users have few problems with navigation.
  • Designers thinks sites are more intuitive then they really are-- users still struggle with way-finding and ease of use.
  • Users want to find information quickly and easily even though they want more content, they struggle with getting the basic information related to their task or information search.
